7/4/2023 0 Comments Garmin virb edit 64 bitBattery life in practice is nearer 2 hours recording time rather than the 3 stated. She has some vision but we thought it would enable her to see a bit more of some of the places we'd been through by recording our rides. Not to catch miscreant motorists in action, but as primarily as an aid for my sight-impaired tandem stoker. Ohh, one thing to mention, VIRB edit exported videos are huge! Stick it through a compression filter or something. Here's a 3 minute video of my cycle home for lunch (wohoo so exciting! ) output from the edit software at 480p. You can select what graphics you use for each measure you stick on the screen and there's various options. A few seconds of faffing to get them to line up and voila. I just plugged in the 800, then selected the relevant tracks. Another thing you can do with VIRB edit is overlay the video with an associated GPS track. The VIRB edit software detects the camera, you can import through the software and once imported get the option to delete from the camera. I've done all of 2 10 minute rides with this so this is a very initial view, but seems ok. Slide the large switch on the left of the camera body and it turns on and starts recording straight away. Very useful if you helmet mount or rear mount the camera, but as it's sitting next to the 800 on my bars, not so useful for me. Pairing to the 800 was relatively simple and the 800 gets the option to add another page to the screen to allow you to turn recording on or off, and to take still cameras. One thing you can do is control VIRB cameras from some Garmin devices through an ANT+ connection. Another option I turned on was image stabilisation and finally you have the option to toggle the recording light on or off. There's also a few different field of view settings, but lens correction only works on one and as soon as you select the option it defaults to the field of view. There are a number of different video settings, but I went for 720p 30 frames, which is about 55 minutes on my 4GB card. I also installed the VIRB edit software which you have to download from Garmin, which ran a firmware check on the camera when I plugged it in. I knew about the bar mount so ordered one with the camera, and luckily had a 4GB SD card going free. Two things you need to know before you get this camera (one I knew about beforehand and the other was a bit of a surprise) that are going to add more money to your purchase. The form of the newer cameras is much more like a gopro, but the old one is more like a bloated bullet camera.įirst impressions, it is packed well, the camera weighs more than I expected, and it's bigger than I expected. RRP of this is £249, but Garmin have replaced the VIRBs this year with the VIRB x and xe, so I was able to pick the old model up for £90. As I have an Edge 800 that does these things it seemed a little pointless so I plumped for the basic model. The elite is the same camera, but with WIFI, GPS, barometer, all built in. There are 2 versions of this camera the VIRB and the VIRB elite. This got rid of go-pro's from the selection straight away! In the end I plumped for a Garmin VIRB. I had no idea which one to get, other than knowing that I did not want a big square box, and I only had about £100 to spend. After a bit of an incident with a driver I caved in and got a camera.
